Mount Gambier RSL & District Bowling club was founded in 1963.
On October 12th 1960, George Adams, a Life Member of the Mount Gambier Bowling Club, met with the Committee of the Mount Gambier RSL to seek support for the formation of a second bowling club.
A public meeting was called on November 23rd 1960, and a steering committee was formed. Four acres of land adjacent to Frew Park was initially leased and then later purchased from the City Council.
Money was raised through loans and debentures. The RSL donated 2,000 pounds ($4,000) towards the formation of the Club and has since been a great sponsor and supporter of the bowling club for many years.
The first green was completed by December 1962. The first official tournament was held on January 20th 1963. A caravan was used as the “club rooms” at this stage. Work began on the construction of the new clubrooms and the other two greens were completed.
The core of the current club rooms and greens were officially opened on November 30th 1963.
